International tax law

Internationaal belasting

Meijburg & Co has a broad range of expertise where international tax law is concerned. Our professionals can provide you with advice and support in all areas. Further details of five of these specialist areas are given below. These are country/regional desks, tax treaties, EU treaty freedoms and state aid, EU directives and regulations and EU arbitration. Our experts are here to help you succeed with your international challenges.

Country/Regional desks

Firstly, we have designated country/regional desks for both Dutch and international companies. Per country/region, we have dedicated professionals specialised in the relevant markets. We bring you in contact with local KPMG specialists, who have in-depth knowledge of the local markets and the specific legal and tax systems. In this way, conducting international business becomes much easier for you. In addition, we offer support to foreign companies when they wish to expand or establish themselves in the Netherlands. Do you want to know exactly what we can do for you? You’ll find more information on the Country/Regional desks page.

Tax treaties

If, as a resident of the Netherlands, you receive income from another country, then there is a sizeable chance that both countries charge tax on that income. This is also the case if you live in another country and receive income from specific sources in the Netherlands. In order to avoid such double taxation, the Netherlands has concluded tax treaties with around 95 countries. The content of these differs per treaty. Meijburg & Co’s experts can help you not to lose your way among the regulations. Read more about it on our Tax treaties page.

EU treaty freedoms and state aid

In the European Union, fundamental freedoms are laid down in the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union, also known as the TFEU. Supplementary to these freedoms, this Treaty rules to prevent state aid. Meijburg & Co’s specialists are here to help you with these issues. You will find more information about this on our EU treaty freedoms and state aid page.

EU directives and regulations

EU law consists not only of treaty freedoms, but also of directives for, among others, direct taxation. These cover a variety of direct taxes, from corporate income tax to personal income tax. There are so many directives that it is sometimes difficult to oversee everything. In such cases, Meijburg & Co’s professionals are here to help your organisation. Would you like to know exactly how we can advise and support you? Then please visit the EU directives and regulations page.

EU arbitration

Lastly, we are here to assist you when you are confronted with disputes under EU arbitration. The European Union’s Arbitration Convention entered into force on 1 January 1995. The purpose of this convention is to eliminate double taxation. This can happen when tax authorities correct the profit of affiliated companies, because transactions have not taken place in accordance with the ‘at arm’s length’ principle. This often leads to complex disputes. Meijburg & Co’s specialists are here to help you with such disputes. You can read more about the procedures and the arbitration directive on the EU arbitration page.
